No 2. John Lee

This house at the end of St John’s Square was the home of John Lee (1759-1836) a Wakefield lawyer and developer who masterminded the building of the Square and its central church in the 1790s. His house is, understandably, the best in the Square, facing south and with a substantial garden. His ambition and ingenuity lay behind many other local schemes including the Lake Lock rail road and the Wakefield and Aberford turnpike. The house is now home to the Junior School of Wakefield Girls’ High School.
